Job Summary

Under the direction of the Director of Collections, Systems and Services, the User Services Assistant provides customer support to students, faculty, and staff at Occidental College, as well as supporting a variety of services at the Occidental College Library.

This role involves supporting the overall operations of the library, particularly at the Information Desk and the Critical Making Studio. Responsibilities will involve assisting User Services Student Assistants and Critical Making Studio Producers with routine tasks such as checking materials in and out, retrieving physical items for patrons, reshelving materials, troubleshooting technology issues, using specialized equipment, and handling clerical duties. The User Services Assistant will also monitor building maintenance issues and report them to Facilities Management, as well as any security concerns to Campus Safety.

Additionally, the User Services Assistant may be required to open or close the Library in the absence of full-time staff and student assistants.

 

Job Duties

  • 50% - Deliver customer service to students, faculty, staff, and visitors at the Occidental College Library's Information Desk. This includes checking materials in and out, processing hold requests, assisting patrons with technology issues, and handling clerical tasks. - (Essential)
  • 30% - Assist students, faculty, staff, and guests in utilizing Occidental College's makerspace, the Critical Making Studio. This includes providing technology troubleshooting and guidance on specialized equipment such as audio/video recording devices, 3D printers, scanners, button-makers, sewing machines, and vinyl cutters. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Monitor and report building safety and security issues. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Carry out building opening and closing procedures, which involve unlocking and locking doors, turning lights on and off, and ensuring that patrons can enter and exit the building safely. - (Essential)

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One year of customer service experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications or any combination of productivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Technical troubleshooting abilities. Capability to work independently with minimal supervision.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in fields related to position responsibilities.
  • One year of experience working in an academic library or equivalent education and/or training.
  • Familiarity with specialized technology, including 3D printers, audio and video recording equipment, CNC machines, and other tools commonly found in makerspaces.

 

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE:  $17.28/hr
