Job Summary

Reporting to the Resident Full Professor, the Music Department Coach supports student musicians in preparing and performing music across a variety of styles and genres, from classical to contemporary. The position provides musical coaching, feedback, and guidance to help students develop their technical skills, musicianship, and performance readiness. The Music Department Coach collaborates with conductors, music directors, faculty, and other musicians to ensure effective integration of coached material into ensemble rehearsals and performances. Responsibilities include accompanying rehearsals and performances as needed, sight-reading and learning new music quickly and accurately, adapting to diverse learning styles and group dynamics, and maintaining professional communication and conduct.

 

Job Duties

  • 70% - Provide individual and group coaching to student musicians in the preparation and performance of music across a variety of styles and genres. Offer musical feedback, instruction, and guidance to support the development of technical skills, musicianship, and performance readiness. Adapt coaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and skill levels. - (Essential)
  • 15% - Perform on piano or other appropriate accompanying instruments during lessons, rehearsals, performances, and related departmental activities. Sight-read and learn new music quickly and accurately to support student and faculty performance needs. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Collaborate with conductors, music directors, faculty, and other musicians to ensure effective integration of coached material into rehearsals and performances. Support ensemble preparation by maintaining clear communication and professional working relationships. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Perform other related duties and responsibilities as assigned in support of Music Department programs and activities. - (Essential)

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field to position duties or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience coaching, teaching, mentoring, or accompanying student musicians.
  • Experience performing in rehearsals, ensembles, recitals, concerts, or similar musical settings.
  • Experience collaborating with conductors, music directors, faculty, or professional musicians.
  • Demonstrated record of working effectively with students in educational or performance environments.
  • Excellent professional-level command of the primary instrument(s).
  • Advanced music-reading and sight-reading skills.
  • Ability to learn and perform new repertoire quickly and accurately.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with conductors, faculty, and other musicians.
  • Ability to provide constructive musical feedback and coaching.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and instructional skills.
  • Ability to adapt to diverse learning styles and group dynamics.
  • Knowledge of a variety of musical styles and genres, from classical to contemporary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Music

 

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE:  $60.00/hr
