Job Summary

Reporting to the Chief of Campus Safety, the Campus Safety Sergeant is responsible for providing safety and security services to the College community. The Sergeant will support a safe living and learning environment for students, fosters a productive and creative workplace for administrators, faculty, and staff, and ensures a welcoming experience for campus visitors. Additionally, the Sergeant coordinates all activities during the assigned shift to maintain effective operations and response readiness.

 

Job Duties

  • 50% - Supervision and Shift Management Supervises Campus Safety Officers assigned to the shift, providing guidance, counseling, and input for annual evaluations. Recommends disciplinary actions as necessary and coordinates daily shift operations, including responding to requests for assistance and managing emergency situations until dismissed by higher authority. - (Essential)
  • 30% - Patrol and Enforcement Duties Performs Field Sergeant duties as required, including conducting high-visibility patrols on campus, nearby rental homes, and sorority/fraternity houses. Patrols parking areas, regulates traffic, enforces the vehicle permit program, issues traffic, warning, and parking citations, and provides room let-ins and safety escorts. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Emergency Response and Incident Management Responds to emergency calls, fire alarms, intrusion alarms, and other incidents on campus and nearby rental properties. Provides emergency first aid and CPR, stabilizes injured individuals, investigates traffic accidents, and assumes control of emergency situations until relieved. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Administrative and Operational Support Manages the college parking program, including maintenance of permit and citation databases and the billing process. Prepares daily logs and narrative reports of shift activities. Makes recommendations on training, equipment purchases, and departmental policies. - (Essential)
  • 5% - Special Assignments and Event Support Provides security presence at college events on and off campus. Performs special assignments, surveillance details, and crime investigations, including searches, arrests, interrogations, and report preparation. - (Essential)

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Four years of experience in security or campus safety.
  • Successful completion of POST 832 and 832.2 courses.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Must possess a valid California Guard Card, PR-24 Permit, and current first aid and CPR certifications.
  • A valid California driver’s license with a clean driving record, along with qualification as an Occidental College designated driver, subject to the specific requirements approved by the College’s insurance carrier.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications or any combination of productivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Strong commitment to a quality work product.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically.
  • Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies.

  • Knowledge of contemporary leadership and management methods to ensure employee success and achievement, and demonstration of related and applicable skills as evidenced by the ability to effectively direct, assess and evaluate performance of direct reports.
  • Ability to effectively design, define, describe and document job functions, responsibilities, tasks, and required qualifications associated with supervised positions, and the demonstrated skills in assessing candidates’ experience, knowledge, skills and abilities when hiring for vacant positions, ensuring the best choice of candidate.
  • Ability to provide employee development, training and opportunities for direct reports to demonstrate performance achievement and success; recognizing performance of both above standards and needs improvement and respond accordingly.
  • Skilled at communicating feedback verbally, in writing and electronically; and documenting performance via introductory
    and annual performance appraisals.
  • Skilled in developing and determining corrective employment/performance/behavioral strategies, as needed. Demonstrated ability to design and execute performance improvement plans, conducting disciplinary action and/or determining the appropriateness of employment continuation.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate degree, post-secondary education, or vocational training.

 

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE:  $25.28/hr-$30.00/hr

If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location. In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.  We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
