Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Athletics and working under the supervision of team physicians, the Assistant Athletic Director, Sports Medicine leads the Sports Medicine department and oversees all healthcare services for varsity student-athletes. The Assistant Director manages and develops the athletic training staff while directing daily operations, budgeting, inventory, and facility needs. Responsibilities include injury evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, prevention, and coverage of athletic practices and competitions. The Assistant Director ensures proper medical documentation, coordination with physicians and outside providers, and compliance with insurance and referral processes. The Assistant Director collaborates with coaches and campus partners to support student-athlete health, while developing policies and advancing the overall sports medicine program.

 

Job Duties

  • 80% - Lead the organization and administration of medical services, including accurate medical recordkeeping, medical referrals, and accident insurance procedures. Hire, train, schedule, supervise, and evaluate athletic training staff. Communicate effectively with coaches and administrators regarding student-athlete status. Communicate with parents and guardians when necessary. Manage budgeting, inventory, and purchasing. Provide education, counseling, and professional development for Athletics and Sports Medicine staff. Mentor and evaluate team physicians. Collaborate with the strength and conditioning staff. Develop, review, and update sports medicine policies and protocols. Develop and maintain strong relationships with on- and off-campus medical providers. Supervise student workers. Maintain and repair sports medicine equipment and modalities. Maintain the sports medicine facility. Serve on the Oxy Athletics Leadership Team. Serve on the College’s Student Success Team. Serve as the NCAA Athletics Health Care Administrator. Collaborate with other campus departments, including, but not limited to, Student Affairs, the Dean of Students Office, and the Emmons Wellness Center. Participate in SCIAC athletic trainer meetings. Maintain certification in good standing with the NATA through ongoing professional development and continuing education. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Recognize, evaluate, diagnose, treat, rehabilitate, and refer varsity student-athletes for injuries and illnesses. Apply necessary taping, bracing, and protective equipment for student-athletes. Attend and provide medical services for home and selected away varsity athletic contests. Conduct and supervise medical clearances. Implement injury and illness prevention strategies. - (Essential)

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution. Current Board of Certification (BOC) certification for Athletic Trainers (NATABOC) in good standing.
  • Current or eligible for athletic trainer licensure in the State of California. Current CPR, AED, and First Aid certification.
  • Five years of progressively responsible experience as a certified athletic trainer.
  • Experience coordinating medical care and collaborating with physicians and other healthcare providers.  
  • Demonstrated experience providing comprehensive athletic training services, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency care.
  • Knowledge of the rules and regulations of the College, the SCIAC conference, and NCAA Division III.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications or any combination of productivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically.

  • Ability to effectively design, define, describe and document job functions, responsibilities, tasks, and required qualifications associated with supervised positions, and the demonstrated skills in assessing candidates’ experience, knowledge, skills and abilities when hiring for vacant positions, ensuring the best choice of candidate.
  • Ability to provide employee development, training and opportunities for direct reports to demonstrate performance achievement and success; recognizing performance of both above standards and needs improvement and respond accordingly.
  • Skilled at communicating feedback verbally, in writing and electronically; and documenting performance via introductory
    and annual performance appraisals.
  • Skilled in developing and determining corrective employment/performance/behavioral strategies, as needed. Demonstrated ability to design and execute performance improvement plans, conducting disciplinary action and/or determining the appropriateness of employment continuation.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in athletic training, Sports Medicine, Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or a closely related field.
  • Experience as a certified athletic trainer in a higher education or collegiate athletics environment

 

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE:  $70,304/yr-$90,000/yr

If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location. In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.  We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
