Job Summary

Reporting to a Senior Associate or Associate Dean, Admission, the Assistant Dean, Admission is a key member of the Admission team, responsible for leading recruitment initiatives and representing the institution at high schools, community colleges, and community-based organizations nationwide by delivering information sessions, participating in college fairs, leading workshops, and supporting other recruitment initiatives. The Assistant Dean will work closely with student workers, and support programming for special populations. This work could include supporting student-athlete recruitment, working with admission volunteers, and assisting with the efforts of the Equity & Access team or the transfer team. The Assistant Dean will read and evaluate applications and actively participate in the committee process to select candidates. Additional responsibilities may be assigned based on the needs of the office and the individual’s skills.

 

Job Duties

  • 25% - Territory Management and Recruitment Travel - Manage assigned geographic territories, including extensive out-of-state travel. Maintain and develop relationships with school-based counselors and applicants at high schools and community colleges within their assigned geographic territories, attend recruitment events, and host off-campus programs. Utilize CRM tools to analyze territory strategies, monitor engagement, and assess the effectiveness of events. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Special Project Support - Based on skills and experience, provide support to the equity & access team, student-athlete recruitment, the transfer team, and/or work with alumni volunteers. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Student Worker Leadership - Contribute to the strategic planning and provide senior level guidance for the Student Worker Teams, including campus tours, Summer Internship Program and/or the Senior Fellows program. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Application Review - Evaluate first year and transfer applications. Provide leadership in admission committees, support consistent application review standards, and train new readers by offering feedback and guidance. - (Essential)
  • 15% - Admission Officer of the Day (AOOD) - Serve in the Admission Officer (AO) of the Day rotation, providing leadership in presenting information sessions and responding to questions from prospective students and their families during campus visits, for tours, emailing with questions, or calling the Office of Admission to speak with an Admission Counselor. - (Essential)

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in liberal arts, communication, marketing or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience relevant to the position’s responsibilities.
  • Relevant experience in student leadership, internships, or high-level volunteer service within a higher education setting may be considered toward the total years of professional experience.
  • Experience leading students, peer mentoring programs, or overseeing student worker projects.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications or any combination of productivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy. Strong commitment to a quality work product.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically.
  • Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies.

  • Ability to effectively design, define, describe and document job functions, responsibilities, tasks, and required qualifications associated with supervised positions, and the demonstrated skills in assessing candidates’ experience, knowledge, skills and abilities when hiring for vacant positions, ensuring the best choice of candidate.
  • Ability to provide employee development, training and opportunities for direct reports to demonstrate performance achievement and success; recognizing performance of both above standards and needs improvement and respond accordingly.
  • Skilled at communicating feedback verbally, in writing and electronically; and documenting performance via introductory and annual performance appraisals.
  • Skilled in developing and determining corrective employment/performance/behavioral strategies, as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute performance improvement plans, conducting disciplinary action and/or determining the appropriateness of employment continuation.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in equity and access initiatives, student-athlete recruitment, transfer student programs, or alumni engagement.
  • Essential experience with managing tour guides or other cohorts of student employees, as well as prior involvement in mentoring student teams or leading campus programs.

 

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE:  $70,304/yr

If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location. In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.  We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
