Job Summary

Reporting to the Chief of Campus Safety, the Campus Safety Corporal is responsible for supporting the daily operations of campus safety services. The Corporal oversees safety officers during assigned shifts, ensuring patrols, incident responses, and safety protocols are carried out effectively. The Corporal plays a key part in maintaining a safe campus environment and ensuring compliance with institutional and legal safety standards.

 

Job Duties

  • 40% - Patrol and Emergency Response - Conduct high-visibility vehicle, bicycle, and foot patrols on campus, at adjacent rental homes, and fraternity/sorority houses to deter and apprehend lawbreakers. Respond to emergency calls, fire alarms, and intrusion alarms. Provide safety escorts on and off campus. Provide a visible presence at college-sponsored events both on and off campus. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Incident Reporting and Documentation - Prepare incident reports for supervisory review. Maintain a daily log of shift activities. Write work requests to report and correct safety or facility deficiencies. - (Essential)
  • 20% - Access Control and Assistance - Provide building access to authorized individuals. Respond to general requests for assistance from campus community members. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Parking and Permit Enforcement - Enforce parking regulations and monitor vehicle permits on campus. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Support Duties - Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisory staff to support campus safety operations. - (Essential)

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year security/campus safety experience and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Valid California BSIS guard card, first aid, and CPR certification.
  • Valid California driver’s license (with a clean driving record) and be able to be qualified as an Occidental College designated driver (subject to the specific requirements approved by the College’s insurance carrier).
  • Successful completion of the Peace Officers Standards & Training (POST) 832 P.C. and/or 832.2 P.C.
  • Course(s), or the certification must be obtained within the first six months of employment.
  • Experience in security, law enforcement, or campus safety role.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications or any combination of productivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Strong commitment to a quality work product.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically.
  • Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies.

    and annual performance appraisals.
  • Skilled in developing and determining corrective employment/performance/behavioral strategies, as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute performance improvement plans, conducting disciplinary action and/or determining the appropriateness of employment continuation.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in Campus law enforcement, corporate security, and/or campus safety in a higher education environment.

 

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE:  $20.19/hr-$24.52/hr

If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location. In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.  We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
