Job Summary

Reporting to the Assistant Director of Residential Education, the Residential Director (RD) is a 10.5-month live-in position responsible for overseeing the administration of co-educational residential communities. Residential Directors directly supervise a paraprofessional staff of 11-18 Resident Advisors (RAs) and manage residential communities housing 315-515 undergraduates, with a total on-campus population of 1,670 undergraduates.  This role's responsibilities include fostering an appreciation for diversity, equity, inclusion, and cultural competency within the halls, staff supervision, student conduct, counseling and referrals, programming, and overall building administration. Additionally, each Residential Director leads a collateral assignment that supports the broader Residential Education and/or Housing Services operations.

 

Job Duties

  • 30% - Provide oversight, strategic leadership programmatic vision for a set of residence halls or houses (i.e. residential communities). Current residential communities include: First-Year Experience, Upper Division, and Themed Living Communities. This includes being the primary staff liaison for all residents within the community, supporting and leading programming, following up on facilities related concerns that impact the student living experience, and addressing community concerns and violations of the Code of Student Conduct. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Provide direct supervision, evaluation, and mentorship to 11-18 Resident Advisors (RA). This includes leading weekly staff meetings, holding regular 1:1 meetings with individual staff, leading feedback or job action meetings, and assisting with conflict mediation/crisis management that impacts the RAs within the community - (Essential)
  • 10% - Manage residential community budget, and support RAs in all expenditures pertaining to programming/support needs. This includes timely submission of receipts and paperwork to the REHS Office Manager. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Manage care reports within the assigned residential community. This includes supporting students who are experiencing challenges at Oxy, and facilitating conversations, and referring students to best appropriate campus resources. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Provide 24-hour on-call first responder coverage on a rotating basis. - (Essential)
  • 10% - Provide leadership for one of the four collateral assignments that support the greater goals of the department. Current collateral assignments include RA Training & Development, RA Selection, Themed Living Community Development, and Housing Operations Support. - (Marginal)
  • 5% - Serve as a hearing officer within the Office of Student Conduct, and support the Assistant Director of Student Conduct and Restorative Practices in the management of conduct matters within the assigned residential community. - (Marginal)

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Social Work, Human Services or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • One year of post-baccalaureate experience in residence life (graduate or professional). Previous experience in an on-call role (undergraduate, graduate, or professional).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications or any combination of productivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy. Strong commitment to a quality work product.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically. Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, inclusion & diversity.
  • Demonstrated skill in adapting to and performing work effectively in high-volume, high accountability, confidential environment with multiple and changing priorities. Effective organizational, logistical, time management and planning skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks/projects simultaneously, prioritize and fulfill the functions of an office in a timely manner.
  • Ability to self-motivate and work independently.
  • Ability to provide effective leadership and training, and to work effectively and professionally across functions, disciplines, levels, and with diverse groups.
  • Knowledge of contemporary leadership and management methods to ensure employee success and achievement, and demonstration of related and applicable skills as evidenced by the ability to effectively direct, assess and evaluate performance of direct reports.
  • Ability to effectively design, define, describe and document job functions, responsibilities, tasks, and required qualifications associated with supervised positions, and the demonstrated skills in assessing candidates’ experience, knowledge, skills and abilities when hiring for vacant positions, ensuring the best choice of candidate.
  • Ability to provide employee development, training and opportunities for direct reports to demonstrate performance achievement and success; recognizing performance of both above standards and needs improvement and respond accordingly. Skilled at communicating feedback verbally, in writing and electronically; and documenting performance via introductory and annual performance appraisals.
  • Skilled in developing and determining corrective employment/performance/behavioral strategies, as needed. Demonstrated ability to design and execute performance improvement plans, conducting disciplinary action and/or determining the appropriateness of employment continuation.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Social Work, Human Services or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Four years of post-baccalaureate experience in residence life (graduate or professional).

 

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE:  $60,060/yr

If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location. In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth.  We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
